If you’re dreaming of a classic Western mule deer hunt, South Dakota offers the perfect mix of opportunity, adventure, and access. Known for its vast landscapes and thriving deer populations, mule deer hunting in South Dakota continues to attract both rifle and bow hunters from across the country. With lower hunting pressure than surrounding states and a strong population of mature bucks, South Dakota should be high on every hunter’s list.

Why South Dakota for Mule Deer Hunting?

South Dakota offers a rare opportunity to pursue both whitetail and mule deer in the same season, but the best mule deer hunting takes place west of the Missouri River, where the rugged terrain and wide-open prairies provide the ideal habitat for big bucks.

At Rock Road Outfitters, we hunt on carefully managed private properties located west of the Missouri River, including areas near Newell and Hot Springs. These regions are known for their strong mule deer genetics, low pressure, and open country that makes glassing and spot-and-stalk hunting both challenging and rewarding.

Where We Hunt: Prime Mule Deer Territory

Our Newell and Hot Springs camps offer access to thousands of acres of private land in western South Dakota as well as South-Central South Dakota. These properties lie in the heart of South Dakota’s mule deer range, offering ideal terrain with deep draws, sage flats, and broken hills that mature bucks use to bed and feed.

Hunting west of the Missouri also gives our clients better odds of drawing tags, and higher chances of seeing mature mule deer bucks during both archery and rifle seasons.

Licenses and Tags for Mule Deer
